Favorite Designer Haul-How to Save Shopping on Sale

shoppin

Tart, bebe, Anthropologie and Hautelook are just a few of my favorite designers and places I love to shop for designer fashions. Join me while I go through my designer haul and also share with you a few of my tricks on how I save money while I’m shopping on sale. If you go to my YouTube Channel, Embellish Life on YouTube you can find the video: Favorite Designer Haul I will show you the items that I purchased discus how to save while shopping on sale and in the end of the video there is a quick fashion show of the items I bought styled with some of my own clothing for some fun everyday looks. I pride myself on the ability to dress in high end clothing and/or the appearance of designer fashion, without the cost. I attribute most of my motivation not to pay retail price on any of my clothing or accessories to my years working in the fashion and beauty industry in a variety of different capacities which has given me a unique perspective on style, quality and cost of not only high end fashion but also mid-range and affordable designers.

It is not always a given that you are going to save just because you are shopping at a sale, at an outlet store, or in a discount mart. Just because an item is less expensive or marked down doesn’t always mean it is a good deal or a good deal for you. Some quick things to keep in mind are the 3 Q’s, Quality, Quantity, and Question: If the quality is not good it really doesn’t matter how inexpensive it is if it going to fall apart after you wear or wash it a few times. If you have a lot of a particular item buying another one on sale or at a deep discount isn’t really saving you money; if you already have 10 in your closet. Always ask yourself the question, “Do I really need this, will I use it at least 12 times in a year, and do I have items already that work with it or will I have to spend money before I’m able to use it?”
Here are my 5 tips for saving while shopping on sale:

1. Make a list of what you are looking for and stick to your list to keep your budget in check. Enjoy the sale, browse the racks, get ideas for future purchases, take notes or photos, but if it is not on the list and you don’t need it… Don’t buy it!
2. Don’t forget to check your closet for Basics and add anything you might be missing to your list. Sales are a great place to pick up Classics and your Basics like the LBD (little black dress), white blouse, jeans, black or nude pump… These are the items we always need and are so easy to forget until after we get home and it is too late.
3. List the DON’T BUY items that you have too many of or you can’t resist. We all have them; it may be a favorite color (a closet full of black) or a print (too many polka dots) or even an item (50 T-shirts). Whatever your vice, it may be helpful to add it to your list as a reminder that you should NOT BUY another item like that, you have enough. It’s worth a try…
4. Sales are a great time to do shopping for gifts. Birthdays, special occasions and even Christmas, it is never too early if you have all the right information. List favorite colors, sizes, designers and wish items if you can. You may have the opportunity to find great gifts at affordable prices.
5. Don’t buy something just because it is on sale. This is where sales can be deadly; you see the amazing savings and you can’t help but see the dollars saved without realizing the dollars spent. If you don’t really need the item it doesn’t matter how much you saved on it; you spent money for something you were not intending to; which brings you back to Tip #1. The exception to this tip is if it is a classic/basic that you can always use. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon a classic or basic piece that is a great deal, that may not be on your list or exactly what you need but you know you will be able to use it at some point; then it is worth stopping and considering how much use will you get out of it. Ask yourself, is it something you can keep for years, is it extremely well made and is the fabric something that will last (if the item is still expensive, if it is under $20 don’t worry about it).

I hope these tips are helpful to you the next time you get ready to go to a big sale; either online or in a store. Don’t forget the 3 Q’s while you’re shopping whether on sale or full price. I know sales are fun and the savings can be intoxicating. Before you get caught up in the moment and let the “Red Tags” run away with you, I hope you think of these quick and easy tips and if you don’t physically write done a list at least mentally remember what it was you had set out to get and try to keep yourself to that goal. You might be surprised how good it feels to double save money, not only on the items you bought on sale but on the items you didn’t buy because you stayed on task.

500 Subbies Ask Me Anything!

Snapshot_11I had a Giveaway on my YouTube channel for my subscribers to thank them for supporting me and to celebrate reaching over 500 subscribers. I gave away a wonderful tote filled with all sorts of beauty and fashion items; if you would like to see go and check out the video, I will leave a link shortly. To be a part of the Giveaway I asked my subscribers, you did have to be a subscriber to take part, I asked my subscribers to ask me any question they would like to know about me. Since I am a newish channel I thought this would be a fun way to get to know each other better. It is my goal with Embellish Life to create a community of individuals that can learn and grow together and feel comfortable together. I feel that the only way you can do that is if you put yourself out there and are willing to let yourself be known. Show everyone what you are all about, I think false assumptions are the biggest mistakes people can make and can also get people into the most trouble… You know what they say about “Assume” ing anything… LOL Anyway, even though the giveaway is all over my video on all the answers to all the great questions that my subscribers asked me is all completed. It is a great insight into who I am, what I am doing with Embellish Life, a little bit about my family and how I got to where I am today; if you are interested.

How to Decorate a Designer Christmas Tree

DesignerTree

Have you ever wanted your tree to look like one of the professionally decorated tree in the stores or magazines? I have a few tips on how to make your tree look like a Designer Christmas Tree. I even have a little something special for anyone who likes wine… As long as you are 21 😉 Watch this video and learn to decorate like a pro. Embellish on YouTube or go directly to the video at Decorating a Designer Tree.

Chris Cross Tree Ribbon:
1. Cut 4 to 8 strips of ribbon 2x the height of your tree. I have a 10’ tree (somewhat narrow) so I cut 6- 20’ strips.
2. Gather the ends together on one end of your ribbons and secure them with a twist tie or rubber band.
3. Stick the gathered end onto the top part of the tree; where you want the ribbons to start. I put mine right below my topper display.
4. Spread the ribbons out evenly around the tree.
5. Gather two ribbons crossing them where you want them to meet… Do this around the tree; think about braiding your hair, it is kind of the same idea.
6. When you get to the bottom with your salvage end tie a bow or square knot (depending on how much ribbon you have left.) I did a square knot because I would using the florals on each cross.

This is what my tree looks like all finished:

Fall Soup-Moroccan Butternut Squash

fall soup

I was in the mood to cook one of my favorite fall soups and I thought I would share it with you. I am an unconventional cook and don’t do it often; unless it is appetizers… I’m the queen of the appetizer! I rarely use measuring spoons and I never follow a recipe to the tee; I always tweak it just a bit or combine 2 or 3 recipes. That being said, I rarely get any complaints and quite frequently am asked for my recipes to some of my favorites; which can be hard at time to remember exactly what I did to get to the finished product.

In the fall I start craving soup, even now that we live in Florida and it never seems to get quite cold enough to merit it, I still love a good bowl of soup. It really makes a wonderful dinner with a hardy salad and the leftovers are fantastic for lunch for days. This particular recipe is about 120 calories a serving and serving size is about a cup… If you can eat just one cup and at that calorie count you could have 2 cups and still not be approaching too many calories for a meal.

If you want to see the video on how to make this soup go to Fall Soup Cooking

Here is the recipe for Moroccan Curry Butternut Squash Soup
1 Butternut Squash cut in half and cleaned
2 Green Apples peeled and chopped
2 cups chopped Yellow Onions
4 tlbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 cloves crushed/chopped garlic or 2 tlbs chopped garlic in jar
1 root peeled and chopped ginger or 2 tlbs ginger paste
4 cups Chicken Broth
2 tlbs Heavy Cream
1 cup water (if needed)
1 tsp Curry
½ tsp Cumin
¼ tsp Coriander
¼ tsp Rosemary
¼ tsp Marjoram
1/8 tsp Turmeric
1/8 tsp Cardamom

Nashville Trip

nashville

Peter and I took a long weekend exploration trip to Nashville TN. We are enjoying discovering the South and all of its beautiful landscape and lovely people. I’m having a long standing love affair with the South that I think I need to satisfy with a permanent vacation home and right now Nashville is winning. Then again, it seems every new location I visit wins my heart; some may say I’m a fickle girl, but I think I’m just a flirt, LOL

Here are some of the fun places that we visited in chronological order:
2015-09-18 15.31.48
We stayed at Union Station Hotel by Marriot; it is a beautiful remodel of the historic downtown main train station. Above and beyond the charming nature of the hotel architecture and the lovely rooms, I have to give this hotel a 5 star (out of 5 stars) rating for its customer service. I booked the reservation through Hotel.com and somehow booked it for the wrong date and never caught the mistake. That date came and went we were charged for a no show day, we are still unaware of this, we show up give them our name and there is no reservation. I give the front desk our print out and she notes the mistake, she also notes my distraught nature, as I’ve NEVER done this before (I’m the check 3 times girl). What does she do, she finds us a room, at the same rate, applies the “no show” charge to our current stay and never treats me like the fool I felt. In fact, she treated us like it was their mistake, making sure we were more than tricked out in our room since it was two doubles and not the King we originally booked! Customer Service beyond compare! Shelby was a jewel and made what could have been a terrible first day into a wonderful experience and permeate warm spot in my heart for the hotel and any return trip. I will only recommend this hotel in Nashville and this is where I will stay from this point on, what a fantastic experience. If people in the Service Industry only realized kindness and understanding goes a long way and using it as a tool can be a biggest asset you have in building a business and it is the easiest thing to do, just smile.

Our first stop for amazing Tapas and drinks was a fabulous Happy Hour at Sambuca in the fun Nashville neighborhood called The Gulch. The Gulch is going under revitalization and is becoming a LEED certified Green Neighborhood. It has some great food, music and cute shops. Definitely a must see if you visit. Our server/bartender at Sambuca was a doll, treated us like family and made our first experience in Nashville a pleasure. She actually has family in the same city we live in Florida so we had fun sharing FL vs. TN stories. The food and drink menu was extensive and we tried 6 different tapas and loved every one of them (Crab and Shrimp Dip was our favorite, absolutely decadent). Don’t miss Sambuca on your trip to Nashville.

We took a walk to burn off the food and drink and stopped by Two Old Hippies and Lucchese. Lucchese has the most amazing custom boot I’ve ever seen. If you want to splurge on a boot this is where you should do it. The aroma of leather as you walk in makes you want to be a cowboy or marry one. Two Old Hippies is a big store that is as eclectic as its name would imply. I loved the rhinestone guitars where I left Peter to drool and I perused through all the goodies from jewelry, shoes, clothing and gifts. I landed on some fun fur vest that I have wanted for years. I loved that so many of the stores and eateries had live music in them and Two Old Hippies was setting up their venue for their mini concert.

2015-09-17 18.41.45We had to find an Apple Store and ended up in a Mall of all places but to my surprise found the cutest gift boutique (that does sell online) called Absolution. Their manager, Curry, told me they have a strong Instagram presence, which I am going to start to follow, based on what’s in their store. There candle selection is amazing and they have home décor and creative gift ideas seriously worth an Internet visit!

The next day we did a hard core shopping day visiting the Green Hills area and shopping at Kendra Scott, and Lizard Thicket. There were a lot of other cute boutiques there in the area we were and also a big mall very close by. We also went back to the Gultch area and stopped into eAllen and I picked up a very cute top there.

2015-09-18 22.27.33That evening we took advantage of the Americana Music Fest and ate at City Winery. The food was good and we ate from the fixed wine tasting menu. I would probably not do that again because it was too much food, Peter was fine. Next time I would just order off the regular menu that looked really yummy. There were 5 bands playing that evening and we stayed for 4 of them. The two that I took photos of are T-Sisters out of Oakland, CA and you can understand why they caught our eye… We had to favor CA girls! Anderson East was amazingly dynamic and rocked the house! We both really enjoyed watching them. Their energy was contagious and a lot of fun to watch. The T-Sisters had beautiful voices and a wonderful harmony. Their stage presence was fun also, they were more than their music; which made it a show!

Football Party

football
There is no reason to spend your day cooking for a football party. Here is a way to have a great party and spend your day with your guest and still look like the hostess with all the tricks up her sleeve. The tricks are to make only one or two signature dishes from scratch and embellish the rest with whole foods to enhance their flavor and give them the extra pizazz at presentation.

You can find the recipe to my Mexican Hot Carrots on my blog at: http://embellishblog.com/mexican-hot-carrots/

The Key Lime mini pies are at Sorted Food: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHjqwNR6T1M
(I’m gluten free so we used gluten free gingersnap cookies purchased from Trader Joe’s)

I embellished my Mexican Beans by mixing two styles: Rosartia Spicy Jalapeno and Bush Cocina Latina.

The Queso Sauce was made with Tostitos Salsa Con Queso Medium, Progresso Recipe Starters Cheese sauce, 1 cp shredded Mexican 3 cheese, 2 tlbs. chopped fresh cilantro. Melted all together
I embellished my Southwest Ranch dip by adding some fresh lime juice and chopped cilantro (you could add and fresh herb)

Have fun at your next football party! You can apply these tips to almost any party. A party doesn’t have to be a big stress if you now a few easy steps. Check out my “How to Have a Stress Free Party” for more tips. To see the entire Football Party video you can click on the link and see all the photos and video of the party and set up.

My Big Move- CA vs. FL

soulfulfunday
Moving from California to Florida was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I am no stranger to making a big move with my family. We move from Southern California to Northern California; where we lived for about 5 years and we also made an expat move to Switzerland for about 2 years when the boys were younger. So that was actually a double move if you want to count the big move back. For some reason moving from the West Coast, that I knew all my life to the East Coast was a much bigger deal than I had anticipated; and I am relatively easy going when it comes to environmental changes, making friends and setting up house in a new area.

Want to find out more about the differences I found between CA vs. FL? How the big move affected me? How any big change can be tackled; even if they are thrown at you one after another? Find out what my crazy first year was like in FL and how I lived to tell about it; all while I unpack my last shoe box, ONE YEAR LATER! You can see it all on my YouTube video! Don’t forget to check out my links below to see the other places that you can find me.

There is nothing better than sharing a birthday with a girlfriend! I believe any good birthday should be celebrated all month long. Keeping with that tradition as closely as I can my partner in crime and fellow August Birthday Girl spent her Birthday at a cute little Tea House, of shorts, or maybe you would call it a “girly luncheon” spot, whatever you would label it, it was a totally perfect place for us to start off our Birthday celebration. We didn’t even let the deluge of afternoon rain dampen our spirits. Later that week it was my turn to pick the activity and that is when we hit the shops. We did a vareity of boutique and chain stores, nonsense and utility shopping to make the day not only festive but also very productive!
