Favorite Designer Haul-How to Save Shopping on Sale

shoppin

Tart, bebe, Anthropologie and Hautelook are just a few of my favorite designers and places I love to shop for designer fashions. Join me while I go through my designer haul and also share with you a few of my tricks on how I save money while I’m shopping on sale. If you go to my YouTube Channel, Embellish Life on YouTube you can find the video: Favorite Designer Haul I will show you the items that I purchased discus how to save while shopping on sale and in the end of the video there is a quick fashion show of the items I bought styled with some of my own clothing for some fun everyday looks. I pride myself on the ability to dress in high end clothing and/or the appearance of designer fashion, without the cost. I attribute most of my motivation not to pay retail price on any of my clothing or accessories to my years working in the fashion and beauty industry in a variety of different capacities which has given me a unique perspective on style, quality and cost of not only high end fashion but also mid-range and affordable designers.

It is not always a given that you are going to save just because you are shopping at a sale, at an outlet store, or in a discount mart. Just because an item is less expensive or marked down doesn’t always mean it is a good deal or a good deal for you. Some quick things to keep in mind are the 3 Q’s, Quality, Quantity, and Question: If the quality is not good it really doesn’t matter how inexpensive it is if it going to fall apart after you wear or wash it a few times. If you have a lot of a particular item buying another one on sale or at a deep discount isn’t really saving you money; if you already have 10 in your closet. Always ask yourself the question, “Do I really need this, will I use it at least 12 times in a year, and do I have items already that work with it or will I have to spend money before I’m able to use it?”
Here are my 5 tips for saving while shopping on sale:

1. Make a list of what you are looking for and stick to your list to keep your budget in check. Enjoy the sale, browse the racks, get ideas for future purchases, take notes or photos, but if it is not on the list and you don’t need it… Don’t buy it!
2. Don’t forget to check your closet for Basics and add anything you might be missing to your list. Sales are a great place to pick up Classics and your Basics like the LBD (little black dress), white blouse, jeans, black or nude pump… These are the items we always need and are so easy to forget until after we get home and it is too late.
3. List the DON’T BUY items that you have too many of or you can’t resist. We all have them; it may be a favorite color (a closet full of black) or a print (too many polka dots) or even an item (50 T-shirts). Whatever your vice, it may be helpful to add it to your list as a reminder that you should NOT BUY another item like that, you have enough. It’s worth a try…
4. Sales are a great time to do shopping for gifts. Birthdays, special occasions and even Christmas, it is never too early if you have all the right information. List favorite colors, sizes, designers and wish items if you can. You may have the opportunity to find great gifts at affordable prices.
5. Don’t buy something just because it is on sale. This is where sales can be deadly; you see the amazing savings and you can’t help but see the dollars saved without realizing the dollars spent. If you don’t really need the item it doesn’t matter how much you saved on it; you spent money for something you were not intending to; which brings you back to Tip #1. The exception to this tip is if it is a classic/basic that you can always use. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon a classic or basic piece that is a great deal, that may not be on your list or exactly what you need but you know you will be able to use it at some point; then it is worth stopping and considering how much use will you get out of it. Ask yourself, is it something you can keep for years, is it extremely well made and is the fabric something that will last (if the item is still expensive, if it is under $20 don’t worry about it).

I hope these tips are helpful to you the next time you get ready to go to a big sale; either online or in a store. Don’t forget the 3 Q’s while you’re shopping whether on sale or full price. I know sales are fun and the savings can be intoxicating. Before you get caught up in the moment and let the “Red Tags” run away with you, I hope you think of these quick and easy tips and if you don’t physically write done a list at least mentally remember what it was you had set out to get and try to keep yourself to that goal. You might be surprised how good it feels to double save money, not only on the items you bought on sale but on the items you didn’t buy because you stayed on task.

Haute Look Haul-Shopping Spree

scrn1
Check out all the stuff I got at Haute Look! I’ve been shopping at Haute Look even before they where purchased by Nordstrom. I have been happy with all the additional customer service that has been added since their purchase. One thing that I really love is that you can now return ordered merchandise at Nordstrom Rack and that makes my life so much easier. They have also increased their referral incentive, you now get $20 each time a friend shops. Which is nice little perk to use on your next purchase. One of the changes that I don’t like is that certain items can take up to 3 and sometimes even 4 weeks, to get to you. You have to be careful to check what the shipping time/availability is. This can be really annoying and the only reason that it is not completely discouraging is that the savings are usually so good that it is worth the wait. I do recommend you keep this in mind because it would make a difference if you were buying something for a particular purpose and arrival time would make a difference. Visit my YouTube video so you can see all my purchase for the last few shopping trips to Haute Look. Just join me at Haute Look Haul and check out everything that I got.

If you want to shop at Haute Look too just follow my link and take advantage of all their savings. You can also shop online at Nordstrom Rack from the same link. I haven’t shopped at the Rack Online but I’m sure it is also filled with great deals.

Fashion in My Life

scrn4

If you want to know more about my fashion experience check out my YouTube site. I have just finished a new video about why I’m making videos and where I have learned all I know about fashion and style. You can see the video, Embellish Life-All About Style and find out all you ever wanted to know about me and my fashion experience. A few jobs I didn’t mention in my video, totally forgot and I didn’t want it to go on forever… I didn’t mention working as a Manager and Buyer at a designer leather boutique in La Jolla, CA called Extravaganza and I was a stylist, fashion merchandiser at JigSaw a contemporary clothing boutique also in La Jolla, CA. I actually worked at JigSaw twice once just before I moved to Beverly Hills, CA and after I came home due to my car accident. Tip: Try never to burn bridges… You never know when you might need something from someone again. Even if it is not a job, I believe that life is spiral; hopefully in a upward movement, and always spinning and circling back around. Keep as many doors open and windows cracked, you never know when you might want to go back through to get to the other side. 🙂

4th of July Party

4thjulyparty
This was a great party! We had about 20 guests. The party was partially catered by a local BBQ restaurant which allowed for everyone to enjoy the day and no one person spent the day cooking and prepping over a hot grill. I also had guest that asked if they could help (this happens all the time and people like to chip in if they can). I don’t normally request help but depending on the party and occasion, I do let people bring dishes. Since this was a 4th of July celebration I let people choose their favorite “All American” side, dessert to bring. Depending on your guest list and volunteers you may want to ask what they are bringing so that you don’t have too much of one side or platter. You know your guest best and what will work for your party. Having people help you will definitely take the stress off of you to prepare all the food yourself. If you are a foodie and enjoy the food prep than there is nothing wrong with thanking your guest for the offer and letting them know you have it all taken care of. Suggest just bringing a bottle of wine or soda… If they will not take “no” for an answer.

Later in the evening we all walked to the bridge to watch fireworks and we even had a few of our own (yes, they are legal here 😉 ) If you would like to see more of the set-up and decorations please check out my Embellish Life YouTube Channel and watch the video!

Watermelon MojitoHere is the recipe for the Watermelon Mojito:

It’s summer, try one, and I guarantee you’ll still be drinking them after Independence Day is over.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups watermelon (cubes about 6 cubes)
5 mint leaves
1/2 oz lime juice
1.5-2 oz rum
1/2-3/4 oz simple syrup (I swap out the simple syrup and club soda for diet ginger ale)
Club soda

Instructions
Cut the watermelon into cubes and measure out 1 1/2 cups (to save time buy the pre-cut watermelon that you can find at most grocery stores in the produce section). Combine the watermelon, lime juice, mint leaves, and simple syrup (I leave this out) in a cocktail shaker. Thoroughly muddle the mixture until the watermelon is mostly liquid. (Here is where I change it up… I use a hand blender and if I am making a big batch for a party I put it into the blender. Once it is all smooth I put it through a strainer to collect most of the pulp. Now continue on) Add the rum and some ice cubes. Shake. Next, fill a glass most of the way up with crushed ice. Strain the watermelon mixture into the glass. Top with club soda (this is where I use the diet ginger ale)

Mexican Hot Carrots

After moving from San Diego to Los Gatos I was surprised to find that the one thing that we could not find up here was really good authentic Mexican food.  I get it, we lived really close to the Boarder and there is no shortage of awesome Mexican food in San Diego but I was a little surprised that Northern CA seemed to be void of 24hr taco stands.  We have been here for almost 3 years now and we have found some pretty good Mexican food but one thing that seems nowhere to be found is Mexican Hot Carrots.  Most places don’t even know what I’m talking about when I ask, those who do just smile and say “No”.  So, what do you do when you can’t find something in the real world… You hit the Internet!

Sure enough, I found some recipes, the one I liked the best was from a lady that was also from San Diego and moved up to Northern CA too and found the same thing I did when looking for Mexican Food.  Here is her food blog:  Warm Kitchenette.  I modified her recipe by looking at a few others and then also adding some spices that I personally like and making about 6 batches because we love them so much; it morphed into my own creation.  Here is my version, have fun change it to meet your taste.  The amounts are totally fluid, I’m not even sure if they are super accurate since each time I make them I just chop and throw stuff in but it is pretty close so it will be really good and easier than you would ever imagine.  Which leads me to wonder, why in the world do they not make them up here???

Mexican Hot Carrots

Ingredients

2 lbs of Carrots

2 yellow Onions

7 oz of jalapeno peppers w/liquid

2 tbls chopped garlic (or more to taste)

3 tbls chopped fresh cilantro

5 fresh Basil leaves

2 dried Bay leaves

2 tsp Mexican Oregano leaves

2 tbls sea salt

Cracked pepper corns

Dash of Honey or Agave (optional, I’ve used honey)

8 cups Water

4 cups White Vinegar

Instructions

  1. Slice the carrot at a slant about 1/4″ thick, cut onion into 1/4″ slices
  2. Boil just the water and add your sliced carrots, onions and garlic for about 15 min. Remove carrots and onions from water and put in a container. Leave carrot water in pot and add your vinegar.
  3. To the water/vinegar mixture add the remaining ingredients and simmer for about 10min.
  4. Pour the hot mixture over the carrots and you are done.
  5. Let cool and then put into fridge.  You can eat after cool but the next day they are even better and as they sit in the fridge they really get better.  Of course, after the first day in the fridge I put them into smaller containers and cover.
