Favorite Designer Haul-How to Save Shopping on Sale

shoppin

Tart, bebe, Anthropologie and Hautelook are just a few of my favorite designers and places I love to shop for designer fashions. Join me while I go through my designer haul and also share with you a few of my tricks on how I save money while I’m shopping on sale. If you go to my YouTube Channel, Embellish Life on YouTube you can find the video: Favorite Designer Haul I will show you the items that I purchased discus how to save while shopping on sale and in the end of the video there is a quick fashion show of the items I bought styled with some of my own clothing for some fun everyday looks. I pride myself on the ability to dress in high end clothing and/or the appearance of designer fashion, without the cost. I attribute most of my motivation not to pay retail price on any of my clothing or accessories to my years working in the fashion and beauty industry in a variety of different capacities which has given me a unique perspective on style, quality and cost of not only high end fashion but also mid-range and affordable designers.

It is not always a given that you are going to save just because you are shopping at a sale, at an outlet store, or in a discount mart. Just because an item is less expensive or marked down doesn’t always mean it is a good deal or a good deal for you. Some quick things to keep in mind are the 3 Q’s, Quality, Quantity, and Question: If the quality is not good it really doesn’t matter how inexpensive it is if it going to fall apart after you wear or wash it a few times. If you have a lot of a particular item buying another one on sale or at a deep discount isn’t really saving you money; if you already have 10 in your closet. Always ask yourself the question, “Do I really need this, will I use it at least 12 times in a year, and do I have items already that work with it or will I have to spend money before I’m able to use it?”
Here are my 5 tips for saving while shopping on sale:

1. Make a list of what you are looking for and stick to your list to keep your budget in check. Enjoy the sale, browse the racks, get ideas for future purchases, take notes or photos, but if it is not on the list and you don’t need it… Don’t buy it!
2. Don’t forget to check your closet for Basics and add anything you might be missing to your list. Sales are a great place to pick up Classics and your Basics like the LBD (little black dress), white blouse, jeans, black or nude pump… These are the items we always need and are so easy to forget until after we get home and it is too late.
3. List the DON’T BUY items that you have too many of or you can’t resist. We all have them; it may be a favorite color (a closet full of black) or a print (too many polka dots) or even an item (50 T-shirts). Whatever your vice, it may be helpful to add it to your list as a reminder that you should NOT BUY another item like that, you have enough. It’s worth a try…
4. Sales are a great time to do shopping for gifts. Birthdays, special occasions and even Christmas, it is never too early if you have all the right information. List favorite colors, sizes, designers and wish items if you can. You may have the opportunity to find great gifts at affordable prices.
5. Don’t buy something just because it is on sale. This is where sales can be deadly; you see the amazing savings and you can’t help but see the dollars saved without realizing the dollars spent. If you don’t really need the item it doesn’t matter how much you saved on it; you spent money for something you were not intending to; which brings you back to Tip #1. The exception to this tip is if it is a classic/basic that you can always use. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon a classic or basic piece that is a great deal, that may not be on your list or exactly what you need but you know you will be able to use it at some point; then it is worth stopping and considering how much use will you get out of it. Ask yourself, is it something you can keep for years, is it extremely well made and is the fabric something that will last (if the item is still expensive, if it is under $20 don’t worry about it).

I hope these tips are helpful to you the next time you get ready to go to a big sale; either online or in a store. Don’t forget the 3 Q’s while you’re shopping whether on sale or full price. I know sales are fun and the savings can be intoxicating. Before you get caught up in the moment and let the “Red Tags” run away with you, I hope you think of these quick and easy tips and if you don’t physically write done a list at least mentally remember what it was you had set out to get and try to keep yourself to that goal. You might be surprised how good it feels to double save money, not only on the items you bought on sale but on the items you didn’t buy because you stayed on task.

What’s My Perfect Makeup Day

perfectmakeupWhat’s My Perfect Makeup Day is a way for my viewers to pick out what they think is the best foundation, mascara, liquid liner and lip color for me. I have been in the hunt for the best coverage, and nicest looking foundation and that inspired me to turn to my viewers for their opinion. Through the magic of technology YouTube has created the ability for me to have an interactive poll running with each of the videos as I demonstrate the products I am trying. All of the selections will be blind test so none of the viewers will know what product I’m using. I will list all the brands I’m using just not what one at each time. I did this so that I would get the most honest and unbiased answer I could… The winner of the poll will be posted the following week video and on my blog so that everyone can use the video and blog for their own makeup hunt!

This series is not only created for my personal search for the Perfect Makeup Day; it is also to help everyone else find their Perfect Makeup Day!!!

Here are some of the Makeup Lines I will be testing in all of the videos over the next 6 weeks:
It Cosmetics
Lorac
L’Oréal
Make Up For Ever
Maybelline
MAC
NYX
Tarte
Two Faced
Urban Decay
Younique

This series will post every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks. The last video will be a Get Ready With Me, where I will use all the makeup that the viewers have voted on to make what they think will be “My Perfect Makeup Day”. Follow along, vote on your favorite choice, maybe you will find a favorite foundation, mascara, liquid liner or lip color too.

I thought the perfect way to start this tour would be to take everyone on a tour of my bathroom where all the “Magic” happens. Checkout what I have done so far to my bathroom with the custom mirrors, lighting and window coverings. I also give you a peek into all my cupboards and drawers to see my makeup and skin care, how I organize it and what I use. It is just a little insight into how I achieve all the looks you see on all my videos. If you haven’t already subscribed I would love it if you did and joined us here at Embellish Life.

Coastal TV Room & Home Decor DIY

homeWelcome to my Coastal Decor Room; join me on an all access tour of the room, how I decorated it, where I purchased many of the items I used to make my coastal sea scape splendor, how and what I made in the room myself and also a few helpful tips on some of the mishaps I had along the way. I will show you all how I fixed a destroyed hutch that came to me from Wayfair (they have an amazing return policy) and I made it into a great bar area. I can’t throw anything away even if I am told to… LOL I am the repurpose queen; it just seems wrong to throw something away if there is a chance to breathe life back into it and I think I did just that. If you check out my video, you will be able to judge for yourself if I was able to revive the bashed up hutch into a fun bar unit for our TV room. I also found a new product that helped me clean a paint mishap I had. There is a lot of great information, ideas and creations packed into this one little video, please check it out 🙂

Spring Floral Hostess Gift

diy giftI had a neighborhood ladies lunch to attend today and wanted to make my hostess gift. I try to make a gift when I can, if I have the time. I thought I would share how I made it. I also shared a very special memory of what makes spring special to me and why I like making gifts for all occasions.

My favorite spring time memory is May Day and leaving flowers in a handmade basket on my grandmother’s doorstep. I lived with my grandparents from the age of 7 to 13 due to my mother giving me up. These were some of the most peaceful recollections of my childhood. I love and cherish the memories of my time living with my grandparents and all they did for me. I love spring time flowers and how much that simple homemade gift filled both my grandmother’s and my hearts with joy. This is why I always try to give gifts from the heart and why homemade gifts mean so much to me. I would love it if you shared your favorite spring time story. 500 Subbies Ask Me Anything!

Snapshot_11I had a Giveaway on my YouTube channel for my subscribers to thank them for supporting me and to celebrate reaching over 500 subscribers. I gave away a wonderful tote filled with all sorts of beauty and fashion items; if you would like to see go and check out the video, I will leave a link shortly. To be a part of the Giveaway I asked my subscribers, you did have to be a subscriber to take part, I asked my subscribers to ask me any question they would like to know about me. Since I am a newish channel I thought this would be a fun way to get to know each other better. It is my goal with Embellish Life to create a community of individuals that can learn and grow together and feel comfortable together. I feel that the only way you can do that is if you put yourself out there and are willing to let yourself be known. Show everyone what you are all about, I think false assumptions are the biggest mistakes people can make and can also get people into the most trouble… You know what they say about “Assume” ing anything… LOL Anyway, even though the giveaway is all over my video on all the answers to all the great questions that my subscribers asked me is all completed. It is a great insight into who I am, what I am doing with Embellish Life, a little bit about my family and how I got to where I am today; if you are interested.

Healthy Chicken Vegetable Soup

Snapshot_20 (1)
Starting the New Year off right, I am promising myself that I will take control of my health and start by eating better! I am going to eat more whole foods, organic when I can and remove as much process foods and sugars from my diet. With this promise to myself I purchased an online program that covers using food to help heal many of my stomach issues (IBS, gluten allergy and diverticulitis). I am going to share some of the recipes that I have really enjoyed in the cookbook. To see my video and subscribe to my YouTube channel please visit here: Embellish Life on YouTube. Here are the ones covered in my video today:
Many of the foods in the cook book start out with a base of Bone Broth (either chicken or beef). Here is the recipe for Chicken Bone Broth

Chicken Bone Broth

• Chicken necks, backs or a whole Roasting Chicken (Free Range Organic preferable)
• Garlic cloves, smashed
• Carrots, cut into chunks
• Onions, cut into chunks
• Spinach or Swiss chard
• 3 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
• 2 Bay Leaves
• Sea Salt and Pepper
• Water
In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients with enough water to completely cover chicken. Cook on high and allow to simmer for 24 hrs. Strain, cool, transfer to airtight storage containers, and chill or freeze.

Healthy Chicken Vegetable Soup

This is my version of the recipe in the book:
• 4 cups of Chicken Bone Broth (or you can do 2 cups Bone Broth and 2 cups of organic chicken broth or water… I found that the soup needs a bit more liquid after cooking for 6 hrs. You may, I did add 1 to 2 cups of liquid after it is done cooking depending on desire.
• 2 to 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (I used 2 breasts)
• 5 stalks of celery
• 5 carrots chopped (I used baby carrots cut in half)
• 1 onion (I used red onion)
• 4 cloves of minced garlic ( I used organic minced garlic in a jar)
• 4 Thyme sprigs
• Sea Salt and pepper to taste
• Chopped Cilantro (recipe called for Parsley)

1. In a slow cooker, combine first 7 ingredients. Season with salt and pepper. Cook on low for 6 hours.
2. Using a fork. Shred chicken in the mixture. Stir in Cilantro and serve (I put in Cilantro about 30 min before it was done to let flavors infuse.

Beef and Vegetable Stew
This recipe is also adapted from my Leaky Gut Cookbook. I have switched out a few items due to my families personal taste. I will list both and you can decide what one you would like to use.

• 2 lbs cubed grass-fed beef stew meat
• 3 sweet potatoes, peeled mad cubed (I use mini gold potatoes because that is what I had but sweet potatoes would be good and less starch than regular potatoes)
• 4 carrots chopped
• 1 cup beef bone broth (I used chicken bone both and it was really yummy)
• 3 cloves garlic minced
• 2 tbls coconut oil
• 1 tbl Worcestershire sauce
• 1 sprig fresh thyme
• 1 sprig fresh rosemary
• Salt & Pepper
• I added a bundle of Swiss chard add in the last hour of cooking. This is totally optional.

1. In slow cooker, combine all ingredients. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Cook until beef and vegetables are tender, 4 to 6 hours on high.
3. In the last hour you can add your Swiss chard.

How to Decorate a Designer Christmas Tree

DesignerTree

Have you ever wanted your tree to look like one of the professionally decorated tree in the stores or magazines? I have a few tips on how to make your tree look like a Designer Christmas Tree. I even have a little something special for anyone who likes wine… As long as you are 21 😉 Watch this video and learn to decorate like a pro. Embellish on YouTube or go directly to the video at Decorating a Designer Tree.

Chris Cross Tree Ribbon:
1. Cut 4 to 8 strips of ribbon 2x the height of your tree. I have a 10’ tree (somewhat narrow) so I cut 6- 20’ strips.
2. Gather the ends together on one end of your ribbons and secure them with a twist tie or rubber band.
3. Stick the gathered end onto the top part of the tree; where you want the ribbons to start. I put mine right below my topper display.
4. Spread the ribbons out evenly around the tree.
5. Gather two ribbons crossing them where you want them to meet… Do this around the tree; think about braiding your hair, it is kind of the same idea.
6. When you get to the bottom with your salvage end tie a bow or square knot (depending on how much ribbon you have left.) I did a square knot because I would using the florals on each cross.

This is what my tree looks like all finished:

Here are some of the things I talked about in the video:

PpLa-Scorpio Pant from Hautelook $25.97: http://www.hautelook.com/short/2t8pC These pants are no longer available at Hautelook. This site is a great place to shop for designer clothing for discounted prices. Hautelook is owned by Nordstrom Co. I have no affiliation with either company.

Fall Soup-Moroccan Butternut Squash

fall soup

I was in the mood to cook one of my favorite fall soups and I thought I would share it with you. I am an unconventional cook and don’t do it often; unless it is appetizers… I’m the queen of the appetizer! I rarely use measuring spoons and I never follow a recipe to the tee; I always tweak it just a bit or combine 2 or 3 recipes. That being said, I rarely get any complaints and quite frequently am asked for my recipes to some of my favorites; which can be hard at time to remember exactly what I did to get to the finished product.

In the fall I start craving soup, even now that we live in Florida and it never seems to get quite cold enough to merit it, I still love a good bowl of soup. It really makes a wonderful dinner with a hardy salad and the leftovers are fantastic for lunch for days. This particular recipe is about 120 calories a serving and serving size is about a cup… If you can eat just one cup and at that calorie count you could have 2 cups and still not be approaching too many calories for a meal.

If you want to see the video on how to make this soup go to Fall Soup Cooking

Here is the recipe for Moroccan Curry Butternut Squash Soup
1 Butternut Squash cut in half and cleaned
2 Green Apples peeled and chopped
2 cups chopped Yellow Onions
4 tlbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 cloves crushed/chopped garlic or 2 tlbs chopped garlic in jar
1 root peeled and chopped ginger or 2 tlbs ginger paste
4 cups Chicken Broth
2 tlbs Heavy Cream
1 cup water (if needed)
1 tsp Curry
½ tsp Cumin
¼ tsp Coriander
¼ tsp Rosemary
¼ tsp Marjoram
1/8 tsp Turmeric
1/8 tsp Cardamom
