 2011 Halloween Couples Costume Party

We have had two Halloween House Parties now.  In 2011 we had a costume party with all the scary effects, fog machines, strobes, eerie music, and old slasher movies playing in the background.  It was a lot of fun; I made labels for the food that were gross and creepy, we had signature cocktails of Black Widow Martinis and we all dressed in our favorite couples costumes.  Here is the recipe for the Black Widow Martini:

 

Ingredients:

2oz. Black Vodka

.5 oz. Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur

2 oz. Black berry or grape juice

Black licorice and sugar for garnish

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with black licorice and add a plastic spider to the stem of the martini glass.

2012 Halloween Craft Party

This year, 2012, I help a fun craft party and we made BOB Jars as a group.  I did the same fun food labels with gross names for yummy food and everyone had a blast eating “Puss filled eyeballs” for Garlic Stuffed Olives and “Raw Flesh and Scabs” for Salami and Cheese… Well, you get the idea.  This year’s signature drink was a Harvest Sangria that I created myself from a collection of different recipes.  I put dry ice in it and it was quite a “Witches Brew”.  Here is the recipe for Heidi’s Harvest Sangria:

Ingredients:

Makes full punch bowl serves about 10 to 12

2 to 3 fresh figs

1 pear thinly sliced

1 apple thinly sliced

2 ripe plums pitted and sliced or ½ cup of cherries mashed a bit

2 bottles of Red Wine (I used Pinot Noir)

¾ cup of Triple Sec

1 cup of Cherry Juice

1 bottle of Sparkling Apple Cider

¼ cup Molasses

(Optional fruit: Orange, Lemon, Apricots and a splash of real lemon juice is good too)

Instructions:

  1. Slice fruit into thin pieces.  The plums, cherries and figs are best if slightly mashed/muddled once you put them in the punch bowl.  Add in molasses and muddle it around a bit with a wood muddler.  Add in wine and Triple Sec and let sit up to 24 hours in fridge; the longer the better for the flavor of sangria.
  2. Just before the party starts add in sparkling apple cider, citrus fruit if you are going to use it.  If you want to have a “witch brew” effect you can add the dry ice now also.

The craft party was a huge success.  The prep for the party is time consuming as you have to paint all the pieces before the party and you have to let them dry completely.  I didn’t account for that are ran into a little trouble with stuff not being totally dry.  Also, if you have the opportunity and ability to get items at bulk or wholesale, do it, it will keep the cost down of each set of Boo Jars.  I let the ladies know what the cost was before hand and don’t forget to give yourself extra time for shipping, painting and dry time.  When you factor in RSVP’s you can see how this can get a little tricky, timing wise.  You need to know your guests are going to come and/or pay you for the parts otherwise you are stuck with a lot of Boo Jars.  Other than this factor, craft parties are such fun and really give guest a wonderful treat to take home and always remember what a great time they had at your party.
