Girlfriends and Cocktails-Making Time for Yourself

Girlfriends and Cocktails, what could be better and more fun! This video is part 2 of my St. Augustine Road Trip with my girlfriend from San Diego, CA. Veronica and I have been friends for over 10 years, as our children went to high school together. This video has some fun cocktail tips and photos of inside the St. Augustine Distillery. I am going to leave you with the link to Part 1 of my video and the St. Augustine Distillery if you want to know more or are planning a trip to the area (highly recommend the tour).

Girls Trip to St. Augustine, FL (Part 1)
St. Augustine Distillery

I think it is so important to take some time for yourself! As women, many times we are so focused on external matters that we forget or ignore our own needs. It doesn’t matter if it is home life, children, work, extended family or friends, so many times we focus on others and completely miss the calls for help and attention that our body and mind are screaming at us.

What is the answer to attending to others as well as looking after yourself? First take time to think, breath and listen to your inner-self. You can do that through prayer, meditation, exercise and long hot bath or shower… There is no right or wrong way to collect yourself unwind. None of these ways are restricted by time, resources or location; we all need to bathe, we all have a floor, chair or log to sit and contemplate, we can all get out and walk around the block alone and prayer can be done on the run, in a car or while doing a chore. There should be no excuses for not weekly, daily or at least monthly checking in with yourself and make sure you are good.

The next step is to act and answer your physical and mental needs; sometimes we just need to get away and not worry about anything. Take a trip with your girlfriend(s), go to a day spa, lunch and shopping, buy yourself a little goody (even if you have to plan and safe, you are worth it!) Going with someone can be very therapeutic. Make it a monthly, weekly or annual thing, depending on how detailed, long and expensive your plans are. Now you have something to look forward to. When life gets hectic, stressful and repetitive you know that you have an escape coming. If you can’t wait to find something small to recharge yourself or try step one again.

I hope you found this post helpful. I want you to go away with the notion that you are wonderful and all your hard work, even if it seems unappreciated does not go unnoticed. If you are feeling forgotten, take back yourself and unplug if only for a few hours, to remind yourself that you are fabulous and so worth it!

Please don’t forget to check out my two videos on my girl’s trip. It might inspire you to do something fun too. I hope it does!

How to be a Good Friend-Kindness Challenge

Today I wanted to talk about something important to me and that is Friendship and what makes a good friend. By luck, it ties into my 2017 Goals/Promises that I made to myself. If you want to hear me talk in detail about Friendship and Goals make sure you check out my YouTube Video. I hope this video inspires you to take my Kindness Challenge and incorporate some type of kindness goals into your daily routine and see if your life and outlook doesn’t change for the better. Let me know in the comments if you are going to try a little more kindness in your life. I would love to hear from you. Please give me a “Thumbs Up” if you like this video and don’t forget to subscribe. Keep reading here for my list of what I think makes a good friend and what my 2017 Goals are.

Here are my ideas on How to be a Good Friend; I’m reading a great book Stiletto Network by Pamela Reyckman and she talks about how women need to support and uplift other women in the workforce and in daily life. She also covers how it is our responsibility to help and support other women to succeed in their goals and dreams. This has always been a philosophy of mine and has been an important part of my work, in coaching, styling designing and being a friend. I want to see others succeed and if I can do something to help that then that is an accomplishment for me as well as the person striving for self-improvement. Here is the list of 5 qualities I find important in being a good friend.

  1. Never lose yourself in a friendship.
  2. A friendship should be reciprocal.
  3. A good friendship stands the test of time.
  4. Real friends don’t gossip about their friends.
  5. Be confident in who you are; celebrate other friends good fortune. Be kind!

I originally posted a video in January that caught my viewers up on what had been going on with me and then went through my goals/promises for 2017. I think it might have been a bit too much information and many people missed the goal part; which I thought was really motivating. In that video, I am going to go through my Goals/Promises for 2017 and I totally changed it up and decided to do something new and exciting. It is an experiment that my whole family is going to join in on. If it works I think it will be life-changing. We would love to have you join us.

What I have decided to do is cut the video in half and re-post the goal part with some updates on our progress. I am also going to add some of my thoughts and feelings about being a good friend, mentor and kind person. This leads directly to the goals our family is trying to implement this year and the promises that we are keeping for ourselves. Here are what we are trying to do this year 2017 Goals/Promises:

  1. Surround my life with kindness.
  2. Forgive my transgressors.
  3. Be Frustrated, not angry and then let it go.
  4. Walk away from negativity.
  5. Positive Mental Attitude.

I am going to leave a link to both of the videos so that you can check out the first have of the Catch-up video if you want to find out some of the things that are going on in my life right now. If not I would go straight to the second video and get a full picture of our goals and some of my ideas on friendship and kindness. It is my hope that this website and my YouTube channel is a place of kindness, growth and safe exchange of ideas. I don’t want anyone to feel that they cannot share a part of them self for fear of being shamed or ridiculed; including myself. Believe me there is nothing you can say that I have probably not heard straight to my face before, so if your goal is to hurt me the written word on a blog will come far from doing it; I’m a lot tougher than that and lived through a lot worse; don’t waste your time.

To see details, check out the link to both of my video: Catch-Up & 2017 Goals/Promises My newest video with the updated goals only and friendship addition is here: How to be a Good Friend-Kindness Challenge

Good Stress vs. Bad Stress: How to Handle Them

Stress effects everyone in their life at one time or another, no one can escape it. The difference is how each person deals with stress and if the stress you are dealing with is the good or bad kind. Last year was a hot bed of stress for Peter and I; Peter had a ton of stuff going on with work and I had a bunch of random medical stuff to deal with. Both work stress and illness stress are ranked in the Top 10 High Stress Situations. Here are all 10 if you would like to see if you are experiencing any, some or all of these factors that can be known to cause stress: Death of a family member, chronic pain or chronic illness, divorce, marriage, loss of job or job change, moving, primary relationship problems, occupational problems, and severe financial problems.
I have listed a few websites that I mentioned in the video if you would like to get more information on the difference between Good Stress and Bad Stress and some of the techniques I like to use for relaxation. Please go and visit my YouTube Channel for this video and others: Embellish Life on YouTube

What is bad stress?
Bad stress can also be termed as distress, and is chronic or ongoing stress that takes over your everyday life.

What is good stress?
Good stress is a type of mild stress that can motivate a person to complete a task or goal. Instead of being harmful and detrimental to the body, it has been proven that mild bouts to actually enhance and improve cognitive brain function. It is important that it only is for a short period.
How can you identify good stress and bad stress?
That’s why it is up to us all as individuals to determine what kind of stress we are under. If it makes us feel invigorated, challenged and motivated, it is probably good stress. If it leaves us tired, worn and unenthusiastic, it is probably bad stress.

Signals of Too Much Stress
It may be tough to tell when you’re experiencing good or bad stress, but there are important ways that your body lets you know that you’re struggling with too much stress. Watch out for the following warning signs:
• Inability to concentrate or complete tasks
• Get sick more often with colds
• Body aches
• Other illnesses like autoimmune diseases flare up
• Headaches
• Irritability
• Trouble falling sleeping or staying awake
• Changes in appetite
• More angry or anxious than usual

5 Fast Relaxation Tips
1. Meditation: App I like Headspace (10 sessions free)
2. Aromatherapy: (lavender, rose, chamomile, jasmine, sandalwood, and sage) I like vanilla
3. Exercise also has some direct stress-busting benefits. Physical activity helps bump up the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins.
4. Create a Positive Reality (Temporary Escape)
5. Bath with candles, music, Epsom salts (detox)

Honorable Mention
1. Spa Day (Create one at home)
2. Retail Therapy (One I use regularly and then my husband is stressed)
3. Wine and any of the above (used in moderation) 😉

Nashville Trip

nashville

Peter and I took a long weekend exploration trip to Nashville TN. We are enjoying discovering the South and all of its beautiful landscape and lovely people. I’m having a long standing love affair with the South that I think I need to satisfy with a permanent vacation home and right now Nashville is winning. Then again, it seems every new location I visit wins my heart; some may say I’m a fickle girl, but I think I’m just a flirt, LOL

Here are some of the fun places that we visited in chronological order:
2015-09-18 15.31.48
We stayed at Union Station Hotel by Marriot; it is a beautiful remodel of the historic downtown main train station. Above and beyond the charming nature of the hotel architecture and the lovely rooms, I have to give this hotel a 5 star (out of 5 stars) rating for its customer service. I booked the reservation through Hotel.com and somehow booked it for the wrong date and never caught the mistake. That date came and went we were charged for a no show day, we are still unaware of this, we show up give them our name and there is no reservation. I give the front desk our print out and she notes the mistake, she also notes my distraught nature, as I’ve NEVER done this before (I’m the check 3 times girl). What does she do, she finds us a room, at the same rate, applies the “no show” charge to our current stay and never treats me like the fool I felt. In fact, she treated us like it was their mistake, making sure we were more than tricked out in our room since it was two doubles and not the King we originally booked! Customer Service beyond compare! Shelby was a jewel and made what could have been a terrible first day into a wonderful experience and permeate warm spot in my heart for the hotel and any return trip. I will only recommend this hotel in Nashville and this is where I will stay from this point on, what a fantastic experience. If people in the Service Industry only realized kindness and understanding goes a long way and using it as a tool can be a biggest asset you have in building a business and it is the easiest thing to do, just smile.

Our first stop for amazing Tapas and drinks was a fabulous Happy Hour at Sambuca in the fun Nashville neighborhood called The Gulch. The Gulch is going under revitalization and is becoming a LEED certified Green Neighborhood. It has some great food, music and cute shops. Definitely a must see if you visit. Our server/bartender at Sambuca was a doll, treated us like family and made our first experience in Nashville a pleasure. She actually has family in the same city we live in Florida so we had fun sharing FL vs. TN stories. The food and drink menu was extensive and we tried 6 different tapas and loved every one of them (Crab and Shrimp Dip was our favorite, absolutely decadent). Don’t miss Sambuca on your trip to Nashville.

We took a walk to burn off the food and drink and stopped by Two Old Hippies and Lucchese. Lucchese has the most amazing custom boot I’ve ever seen. If you want to splurge on a boot this is where you should do it. The aroma of leather as you walk in makes you want to be a cowboy or marry one. Two Old Hippies is a big store that is as eclectic as its name would imply. I loved the rhinestone guitars where I left Peter to drool and I perused through all the goodies from jewelry, shoes, clothing and gifts. I landed on some fun fur vest that I have wanted for years. I loved that so many of the stores and eateries had live music in them and Two Old Hippies was setting up their venue for their mini concert.

2015-09-17 18.41.45We had to find an Apple Store and ended up in a Mall of all places but to my surprise found the cutest gift boutique (that does sell online) called Absolution. Their manager, Curry, told me they have a strong Instagram presence, which I am going to start to follow, based on what’s in their store. There candle selection is amazing and they have home décor and creative gift ideas seriously worth an Internet visit!

The next day we did a hard core shopping day visiting the Green Hills area and shopping at Kendra Scott, and Lizard Thicket. There were a lot of other cute boutiques there in the area we were and also a big mall very close by. We also went back to the Gultch area and stopped into eAllen and I picked up a very cute top there.

2015-09-18 22.27.33That evening we took advantage of the Americana Music Fest and ate at City Winery. The food was good and we ate from the fixed wine tasting menu. I would probably not do that again because it was too much food, Peter was fine. Next time I would just order off the regular menu that looked really yummy. There were 5 bands playing that evening and we stayed for 4 of them. The two that I took photos of are T-Sisters out of Oakland, CA and you can understand why they caught our eye… We had to favor CA girls! Anderson East was amazingly dynamic and rocked the house! We both really enjoyed watching them. Their energy was contagious and a lot of fun to watch. The T-Sisters had beautiful voices and a wonderful harmony. Their stage presence was fun also, they were more than their music; which made it a show!

If you want to see more of our trip; with full photos and video, visit my YouTube channel and my Nashville Vlog for the full rundown of our trip.

Here are links to all the shops, restaurants and bands we saw:

My Big Move- CA vs. FL

soulfulfunday
Moving from California to Florida was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I am no stranger to making a big move with my family. We move from Southern California to Northern California; where we lived for about 5 years and we also made an expat move to Switzerland for about 2 years when the boys were younger. So that was actually a double move if you want to count the big move back. For some reason moving from the West Coast, that I knew all my life to the East Coast was a much bigger deal than I had anticipated; and I am relatively easy going when it comes to environmental changes, making friends and setting up house in a new area.

Want to find out more about the differences I found between CA vs. FL? How the big move affected me? How any big change can be tackled; even if they are thrown at you one after another? Find out what my crazy first year was like in FL and how I lived to tell about it; all while I unpack my last shoe box, ONE YEAR LATER! You can see it all on my YouTube video! Don’t forget to check out my links below to see the other places that you can find me.

Packing Made Perfect

packingPacking is never fun and many of us put it off till the last minute. There is nothing worse than getting to your destination and realizing you have packed everything for everyone else but you don’t have all the things you need or have forgotten that critical item for your special outfit. If you follow my 15 tips these problems and a few more will never plague you again and your get away will be peaceful from beginning to end.

If you want to know how to pack without checking a bag then check out my video on my Embellish Life You Tube Channel and watch Packing Made Perfect! Below you can get the 15 tips to make packing painless and traveling easy; plus a bonus tip to make your tip seem like luxury no matter where you are going. You will have to watch my video to find all my secrets on packing.

Tips for Packing Made Perfect:

1. Make an Itinerary List.
2. Add clothing needs based on Itinerary.
3. Itemize List for clothing.
4. Color Coordinate clothing. ( i.e. Black, White and one or two colors.)
5. Color coordinate your shoes so you take few shoes also.
6. Put your shoes in plastic bags to keep clothing clean.
7. Put heavier Items on the bottom for support.
8. Put jewelry in organza bags to keep from tangling.
9. Lay stuff out days in advance but don’t pack until the night before to cut down on wrinkling.
10. Put the bigger heaver items on the bottom, followed by items that are wrinkle free or don’t wrinkle. The top is for delicates.
11. Travel Makeup bag is kept packed to shorten packing time.
12. Use giveaways and samples in travel bag that meet travel size standards and make your trip a fun trial of new product lines.
13. Save you reusable small jars, 3.4 oz. or smaller, and re-fill them with your full size skin care.
14. Almost empty color can be used in a travel bag; so it is not quite as heartbreaking if lost.
15. Ask Department stores for samples of your fragrance to put in your travel case.
BONUS TIP: Save your samples from dentist, Ulta Beauty free samples, travel sizes, Hotel samples… Use them for your travel case.

Happy Birthday Haul

birthday haul

There is nothing better than sharing a birthday with a girlfriend! I believe any good birthday should be celebrated all month long. Keeping with that tradition as closely as I can my partner in crime and fellow August Birthday Girl spent her Birthday at a cute little Tea House, of shorts, or maybe you would call it a “girly luncheon” spot, whatever you would label it, it was a totally perfect place for us to start off our Birthday celebration. We didn’t even let the deluge of afternoon rain dampen our spirits. Later that week it was my turn to pick the activity and that is when we hit the shops. We did a vareity of boutique and chain stores, nonsense and utility shopping to make the day not only festive but also very productive!

If you want to see what I found on my Birthday shopping adventure and hear about all the fun I had go check out my YouTube Channel at Embellish Life and watch my video Happy Birthday Haul.

Stay Organized and Get it All Done!

uvs150603-001

This blog post corresponds with my YouTube channel, Embellish Life. If you subscribe to my Embellish Life Channel you will be notified by email when new videos come up. I post a new video every week. I always have a signature cocktail, wine or beverage on each of my videos and will post the recipe (if needed) here on my blog.

This weeks video is about staying organized and getting everything done in our busy lives. I know if I don’t utilize my tip (have to watch the video if you want to know what it is), I find myself feeling anxious and completely scatter brained. As soon as I put my tip into play I get an immediate sense of relaxation, accomplishment and inspiration that I will be able to handle anything that is thrown at me. Check out the video and see if my tip can help you too.

The cocktail for this week was Stone Fruit & Ginger White Sangria I found it in the Clean Eating Magazine, July/August 2014. See the recipe below:

Stone Fruit & Ginger White Sangria

Juice of 2 navel oranges (or any fresh orange juice about 1/2 cup)
Juice of 1 lemon
24 sweet cherries (frozen is fine)
1 peach, pitted and slice
1 red plum, pitted and sliced
1 4″ piece of ginger pealed and thinly sliced
1 1/2 cup white wine
3 cups (about a can) of ginger-ale (I use diet)
2 cups sparkling water

1. In a large pitcher, combine orange juice, lemon juice, cherries, peach, plum, ginger and wine siring gently. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour; overnight is better, lets the fruit infuse.

2. To serve, add ginger-ale and sparkling water and pour over ice.

Serving size is 1 1/4 cups calories is 110 but a lot less if you use diet ginger-ale.

Please visit my YouTube site often and subscribe if you would like to be on the top of the list for notifications and information.
